DUDUK (Yakut Violin)

A Gift from Admirers in Armenia

"Americans and Japanese have tried to recreate the sound of the duduk on synthesizers, but they have never managed to even come close. This means that the duduk was gifted to us by God."
— Jivan Gasparyan

The duduk is a wooden wind musical instrument shaped like a tube with nine holes. Its traditional name is tsiranapogh, which translates to "apricot pipe" or "soul of the apricot tree." According to an ancient Armenian legend, the duduk is made from a branch of an apricot tree:

"There once was a gentle Breeze who fell in love with a blooming Apricot tree, but an evil Whirlwind did not allow him to dance near his beloved. After much pleading, the Whirlwind agreed, but on one condition: if the Breeze left, the Whirlwind’s fiery breath would cause the tree to wither. When autumn came, and the tree's leaves dried and could no longer bring joy to the Breeze, he flew away in sadness. The tree withered in sorrow, leaving only one branch. A young man found this branch and crafted a pipe from it, which sang a mournful melody at the first touch of his lips..."

The duduk is a unique instrument that expresses the special dialectic of the Armenian language and is incredibly close to the timbre of the human voice, which is why it touches the soul so deeply. In 2005, the instrument and the music played on it were recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Thanks to Jivan Gasparyan, the sound of the duduk can be heard in many famous films, such as Gladiator, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Xena: Warrior Princess, Game of Thrones, and others.

In Dimash Kudaibergen's repertoire, the magical duduk part performed by Jivan Gasparyan can be heard in Igor Krutoy's composition "Znai" ("Know"). A special duduk arrangement was also recorded for the piece "The Story of One Sky."
