«KYRYMMPA » (Yakut Violin)

A Gift from Admirers from Yakutia, Russia

Kyrymmpa is a string-bow instrument, often referred to as the "Yakut violin." It is one of the oldest Yakut musical instruments. In ancient times, the name Kyrymmpa sounded like "kylyasakh," derived from the words "kyly" — horsehair and "sakh" — striking sparks, together meaning "producing sounds from strings as if striking fire."

It is believed that the violin was invented based on a hunting bow, which was used in ancient times to play music. Kyrymmpa was a frequent guest at celebrations, accompanying folk festivities and dances. The head, neck, and body were crafted from a single piece of wood — larch, elm, or aspen.

In ancient times, the instrument had three strings; now, it may have 2, 3, or 4. It is played with a bow using staccato and glissando techniques — detachment and smooth sliding.
